Workshop to help prevent scams targeting seniors taking place in Wauwatosa
WAUWATOSA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Scammers attempt to take advantage of generous spirit of people during the holiday season, but one presentation hopes to help prevent seniors from falling victim.
Harwood Place, a senior living community in Wauwatosa, is hosting a workshop aimed at educating its residents on how to avoid online holiday scams. The event, featuring Josh Arter, social media director at STIR Advertising & Integrated Messaging, will focus on safeguarding personal information in the digital world.
The urgency of this issue is highlighted by FBI statistics showing a significant rise in elder fraud. In 2022, individuals aged 60 and over reportedly lost a total of $3.1 billion to internet fraud.
Among the participants is a resident of Harwood Place who narrowly escaped a scam that could have cost her thousands.
The workshop is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in The Community Room at Harwood Place, located at 8220 Harwood Ave. This session is free and open to the public, but those interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP by contacting Melanie Hansen at (414) 256-6814.
