1 child, 2 adults saved from Milwaukee River in Ozaukee County

OZAUKEE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- One child and two adults are safe after a water rescue in Ozaukee County on Sunday, June 30.

It happened around 11:55 a.m. after the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office received a report of kayakers in distress on an island in the Milwaukee River.

Authorities say a 38-year-old man, a 26-year-old woman, and their 2-year-old child were kayaking down the river when their kayaks overturned. All three of them were separated from their lifejackets and became stranded on an island in the river. The child was wearing a life jacket. The adults had life jackets with them, but they were not being worn at the time.

The kayaks and life jackets continued downstream when the kayaks overturned.

A water rescue was conducted and all three located safely and brought back to shore.

The sheriff's office says this was the second water rescue to happen in the same stretch of the river within a two-day span.

A previous incident happened on Thursday, June 27. During that incident, the sheriff's office received a report of two kayakers in distress on an island as well. The two were traveling down the river when those kayaks overturned. Those two were also located and brought safely back to shore.

In both incidents, the kayakers entered the Milwaukee River from Lime Kiln Park in the Village of Grafton and their kayaks overturned in the area of Manchester Drive in the Town of Grafton, according to authorities.

One yellow, black and red kayak from Thursday's incident is still unaccounted for. The sheriff's office asks if anyone locates it to please contact them.
