NOW: 16-year-old charged in shooting death of 11-year-old brother

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 16-year-old is charged after police say he shot and killed his 11-year-old brother in Racine.

CBS 58 is not naming the teen since he is underage.

According to the criminal complaint, the teen says he was playing with a gun with his little brother, Jesus Valladares when it went off killing the 11-year-old boy.

His family says their lives will never be the same.

"It's one of the worst things that could ever happen to anybody or any family," said Lucas Zanin, Jesus's uncle. "We just could never imagine this would happen.”

Zanin says his nephew, Jesus Valladares was a happy kid with a million-dollar smile.

“He was a beautiful, happy boy," said Zanin. "He had a good heart. He loved to help other people.”

The incident happened on May 16, near the 2600 block of Prospect in Racine. According to the criminal complaint, Jesus's older brother was playing with a gun in a house and when Jesus tried to grab the gun, it went off hitting and killing him.

Police say when they arrived, bystanders pointed towards the 16-year-old, saying he shot Jesus. Police saying the teen then asked the officers to just kill him and said it was an accident.

"It's a horrible tragedy," said Zanin. "He feels horrible about it.”

Jesus's family says they are left heartbroken.

"This will never be right," said Zanin. "You know this is something that’s never going to go away."

Zanin says the young boy was taken from them too soon.

"When this happens to somebody you know so young and it’s so tragic and sad, you know it really speaks to people about what’s important in life," said Zanin. "All I can say is don’t waste a day because you never know it’s going to happen."

The criminal complaint also says another family member said the teen and Jesus play-fought all the time.

The gun would be out when they did, saying it happened an excess of 50 times.

The 16-year-old is being charged with first degree reckless homicide and is being held on a $150,000 bond.

The family has a fundraiser for funeral and memorial services.
