Two people are dead and three others are injured after a wrong way crash on highway I-43NB overnight.

It happened just after 5:00am near I-43 and National Avenue.

According to Milwaukee County Sheriff's officials, two cars got onto the highway's northbound lanes from Plankinton Avenue and were heading in the wrong direction.

Shortly after getting on the freeway one of the two cars struck an oncoming vehicle.

The vehicle driving the wrong way contained 3 passengers, one male and two females. The male and one female passenger were fatally wounded, the remaining female suffered major injuries.

An adult male and a child were in the vehicle that was struck. Both suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators are still looking to identify and locate the second wrong way vehicle, a dark or silver SUV, and determine whether the vehicles were connected in any way.

The crash remains under investigation.
