4 displaced in Brookfield house fire, 7 small animals dead

BROOKFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A family of four is displaced after a fire broke out in their Brookfield home Thursday afternoon.

No people were home at the time of the fire, but 7 small animals died as a result. 

One firefighter suffered a medical emergency during the fire and was taken to a local hospital. He was treated and released hours later.

Nine other small animals were taken to the Elmbrook Humane Society for safekeeping. 

Fire damage was contained to the basement of the home, and the first-floor living areas also sustaining smoke damage.

The Brookfield Fire Department says the fire is not suspicious. They do not yet have an estimate for the damage. 

The Red Cross is assisting the family.
