50th anniversary of U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam commemorated at Wisconsin Veterans Museum

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Wisconsin Veterans Museum is marking the 50th anniversary of the U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam with a Capitol Square window display, “Our Vietnam Veterans: Then and Now.”

The exhibit, which honors ten of the 57,000 Wisconsinites who served in Southeast Asia between 1965 and 1973, will open on March 29, the same day U.S. ground forces left South Vietnam in 1973.

Starting March 24, visitors can scan a QR code on the window display to access a virtual exhibit on the museum's website. The online showcase allows users to read about the featured veterans and listen to their firsthand accounts of the war.

The exhibit aims to transcend the politics of the Vietnam War and focus on the veterans who faced public ridicule and hostility upon their return. By showcasing their stories, the museum hopes to provide a more supportive welcome home, even 50 years later. The display and virtual exhibit will be available through Veterans Day 2023.

During the Vietnam War, which spanned from 1959 to 1973, approximately 165,400 Wisconsinites served, with 1,241 losing their lives in Southeast Asia and another 79 dying elsewhere in the region while 26 remain missing. The war impacted the entire state, with 71 of the 72 Wisconsin counties losing at least one resident.
