'A dedicated partner': Retired Hartford police K-9 laid to rest

HARTFORD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Hartford Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their own.

According to a Facebook post from the department, K-9 Cash served with the community for nine years, seven months, and 28 days. He was the first K-9 officer for the department.

K-9 Cash retired in December of 2021, and has been residing with his K-9 handler. For the last three months, K-9 Cash battled cancer but the police department says that didn't break his spirit.

"He continued to approach every day with his tail wagging," the Facebook post reads. "K9 Cash was not just a dog, he was a dedicated partner, who worked closely with Officer Dorn every day. He protected the city and its resident from those that would do them harm. K9 Cash's work resulted in many arrests over the years making Hartford a safer community."

In honor of Cash, a procession of K-9 squads traveled from Hustisford to the Hartford Animal Clinic on Friday, March 3, followed by a final salute.

Thank you for your service, K-9 Cash. Rest in peace.
