A victory lap: Rhythm and Soles 5K promotes healing, community outreach
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The first ever Rhythm and Soles 5K took off Friday, Aug. 18. in the morning at Veterans Park.
The event benefitted Healing Starts Today, a Milwaukee County organization that provides resources and help for those experiencing challenges.
"We put it together to help us fund our free groups for human trafficking, domestic violence, and sexual assault victims," said president, Rosalind McClain.
Along with supporting the organization, the 5K also encouraged participants to meditate, reflect, and celebrate their healing.
"This is a moment for us to really just celebrate everything that we have been through, that we've overcome, and then also to just cheer ourselves on to continue moving forward," McClain said.
The starting line was surrounded by family agencies and health advocates, including Milwaukee Public Schools, DCFS, and Clean Slate.
"It is a one stop shop," said nurse, Shonta Anderson, who was providing free blood pressure and blood sugar checks.
The 5K is truly meant for everyone to experience.
A virtual version available through Sunday, meant for incarcerated individuals, or those who just can't make it in person.
"We're letting the people incarcerated know that hey, we're not leaving you out," McClain said.
The race is meant to be a wellness outlet for the body and the mind.
"We're trying to do a lifestyle change; we're trying to get healthier," said participant, Chantia Harmon.
"You got one body, you've got to take care of it, you know," said participant, Michael Howard.
Rhythm and Soles message is a reminder that the community is stronger together.
"It's important for people to know that they're not alone in whatever they go through. That there are people that will stand beside them and walk with them," Anderson said.
