Alderperson race for Milwaukee Common Council District 3 seat in full swing

NOW: Alderperson race for Milwaukee Common Council District 3 seat in full swing

MILWAUKEE (CBS58) -- Milwaukee's Common Council seat left open after Alderman Jonathan Brostoff's death remains open, but not for long.

Last Tuesday was the deadline for candidates to submit signatures for the seat.

Now, candidates are holding events to rally their support.

"Parking is a huge thing, traffic, safety, really making sure money is going in the right places," said Tina, Milwaukee resident.

These are just some of the issues folks living and working in Milwaukee's Third District face.

"Poor people are getting poorer; there's all kinds of controversy and difficulty with our school system," said Sabrina Jordan, Milwaukee resident.

City documents show eight people filed nomination papers to run for the District 3 seat in the upcoming special election.

Including Milwaukee native and Brady Street business owner Nas Musa.

"I really want to help our local business by helping with crime on the street, figuring out how we could prevent less car break ins," said Nas Musa, candidate for District 3 Alderman.

Musa held a 'Hate is a Drag' brunch on Sunday to rally his supporters.

"We want to kill hate, and to kill hate, we have to come together and stand with each other," said Musa.

This is after Alderman Jonathan Brostoff died by suicide less than a year ago.

"Jonathan was a close friend of mine. I was actually with him at his last safety meeting," said Musa.

Milwaukee resident, Sabrina Jordan says the area has needs that need to be addressed.

"There's a strong sense of urgency to address the needs that are facing us and that's why the seat needs to get filled as soon as possible," said Jordan.

The primary will be on Feb.18th.

The top two with the most votes in the special election will advance to the April election.
