Milwaukee man charged, accused in high-speed crash that killed a man waiting for the bus
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 32-year-old Milwaukee man is facing criminal charges in connection with a high-speed crash that killed an innocent bystander.
The crash happened near Sherman Blvd. and Fond du Lac Ave. Monday, July 14.
CBS 58 obtained surveillance video that shows a speeding vehicle plow through a bus shelter. A 55-year-old man waiting at the bus stop, Lorenzo Martin, was killed.
The criminal complaint says it all started when Milwaukee police officers saw a black car with excessive window tint and a license plate that didn’t match the vehicle. When officers tried to pull the car over, they say the car sped off, setting off a chase.
Following the crash, officers witnessed the driver of the fleeing vehicle -- identified as Charles Chipley -- climb out of the driver's door window and attempt to run. However, he was apprehended and arrested.
Police say Chipley reached speeds of 106 miles per hour and that the chase lasted less than thirty seconds.
Court records show Chipley has never been issued a driver's license and is a habitual offender.
Chipley is facing the following charges:
- First-degree reckless homicide
- Vehicle operator flee/elude officer resulting in the death of another
- Hit-and-run resulting in death
- Knowingly operate motor vehicle without a valid license - cause death
