RACINE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Six vehicles were completely destroyed after a fire broke out on a car hauler in Racine County on Tuesday afternoon.
The Racine County Communication Center received multiple 911 calls reporting a fire involving a car hauler tractor trailer.
It happened around 2:17 p.m. on the right shoulder of I-94 Northbound at the Kraut Road overpass.
Upon arrival, crews located the car hauler with 4 vehicles on the trailer that were fully engulfed by fire.
Based on the amount of smoke crossing all lanes of the interstate the decision was made to close all 3 lanes of northbound traffic and once fire personnel arrived on scene southbound traffic was closed during the fire suppression operation. Once the fire was extinguished southbound traffic was opened to normal traffic and northbound traffic was opened to one lane during the cleanup operation.
The initial investigation into the cause of the fire shows there was a mechanical problem involving one of the vehicles on the trailer and a fire started in the engine compartment of this vehicle which quickly spread to the other vehicles on the trailer. A total of 6 vehicles were destroyed by the fire.
There were no reported injuries.
