Alma Center Lincoln senior football player dies after injury suffered during game

ALMA CENTER, Wis. (CBS 58) — A senior football player at Alma Center Lincoln High School died Saturday, from an injury he suffered during a game Thursday night.

Adam Massman was seriously injured during Alma Center Lincoln's game against Turtle Lake, according to the Alma Center-Humbird-Merrillan School District.

The district's superintendent announced Saturday that Massman had died from his injuries.

Massman was a senior at Alma Center Lincoln and a member of the school's eight-player football team.

Alma Center is located in western Wisconsin between Eau Claire and Black River Falls.

The school district has not released details about how Massman was injured.

CBS 58 spoke with WIAA High School Crew Chief Mike Brewer about the current safety measures in place for high school football. 

"It will never be 100% safe, it's a violent sport," Brewer said. "We've tried to make the game as safe as possible for all the participants so tragedies don't happen, but sometimes they do." 

Brewer has been officiating for 26 years and has had his own crew for 15. 

"Safety fouls are 1000% you have to get them no matter what," Brewer said. "Hopefully by getting more safety fouls, it reduces the opportunity for things to happen."
