Alverno College announces staffing and program cuts amid financial struggles

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Alverno College has announced significant changes due to financial struggles, as detailed in a Friday, June 14 press release.

Reductions were expected following a Monday, April 29 announcement from the school, but official details were released Friday. The cuts include dropping 25 full-time faculty positions and 12 full-time staff positions.

The college also plans to realign its 43 undergraduate majors down to 29 and its 25 graduate programs down to 19.

The board of trustees voted on these measures to address the financial challenges faced by the college.

This restructuring will affect academic programs such as Nursing, Education, Psychology, Social Work, Business, Communication, Sciences and Integrated Studies, while the track and field athletic program will be discontinued.

The school noted that the restructuring aims to align with student demand and community needs. At the undergraduate level, all current students will be able to complete their studies at Alverno. However, three graduate programs will be impacted, affecting 25 students for whom the college is seeking teach-out arrangements with other institutions.

"These are difficult decisions to make, and we regret the impact these cuts will have on our colleagues; however, these actions are necessary as we forge a path forward that safeguards Alverno’s survival, preserves our accreditation, and retains our academic integrity," said Christy Brown, JD, president of Alverno College.
