MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- As a shortage of pharmacists across the country continues, the Medical College of Wisconsin is hosting its Discovery Day.

The day is about introducing undergrad students to the pharmacy program and giving them information on what a career path could look like for them.

Right now, there aren’t enough pharmacists to keep up with patient demand.

“We have seen and we all know that pharmacists play a major role in healthcare,” said Dr. Abir El-Alfy, MCW School of Pharmacy assistant dean for student affairs.

The labor shortage is impacting community pharmacies and large chains, according to the National Community Pharmacists Association.

The Medical College of Wisconsin is inviting 30 undergrads to learn more about the school of pharmacy, which is one of 18 U.S. institutions that offer an accelerated three-year PharmD program.

“We give the students a chance to see our school, interact with the faculty but more importantly interact with our partners. One of the main advantages of MCW Pharmacy School is the partnerships that we have with Froedtert Hospital, Children's Wisconsin, the VA, as well as CVS and Walgreens,” said Dr. El-Alfy.

During Discovery Day, the students were given the chance to connect with future employers and current students in the program.

“Educating college students and high school students about the pharmacist role is crucial to help attract more of these students to pursue a career in pharmacy,” said El-Alfy.

The next Discovery Day will be held in October.
