Man detained, released after argument on wristband policy at Oconomowoc beach
OCONOMOWOC, Wis. (CBS 58) — Beachgoers in Oconomowoc are debating a longtime wristband policy after a man was detained for not following orders on Tuesday, July 8.
According to City Beach policy, anyone ages 6 and up must have a wristband if they plan to use the beach.
Those range in cost from $3-$6 for a day pass, to $25-$50 for a season pass.
But earlier this week, that policy came into question during a youth swim lesson.
City Administrator Mark Frye posted a statement on social media, saying a grandparent was at the beach without a band and was asked to either purchase one or move to an area where bands are not required.
“Unfortunately, the conversations between the individual and City Staff reached a level that went beyond the boundaries of ordinary public discourse and became disruptive,” the statement said, prompting a call to Oconomowoc police.
“After refusal to obey the lawful order, the person was detained (not arrested) for the safety of both the officer and the person. The incident was de-escalated with no citations issued,” the statement continued.
CBS 58 spoke with beachgoers Thursday, who said they approved of the policy.
“I think it’s a wonderful thing, supporting the lifeguards and keeping everybody in check and safe, and I think it’s a wonderful thing,” said Peggy Pohle. “I think it’s very fair.”
Jeffrey Mallett agreed, noting he doesn’t think the cost is too much.
“I’d pay $10 if I had to, but I mean, I think the price is more than fair,” Mallett said. “I don’t have any problem with it because it’s not that expensive, number one, and it helps the community control the beach. If you have open access where anyone can come, I think this place would be a zoo.”
The statement said the policy was enacted to help with the safety of kids and beach staff.
Officials said they will look at their wristband policy for those in the swim lesson and make changes if necessary.
Frye declined an on-camera interview with CBS 58 and referred back to the published statement.
