Anonymous donation restores live orchestra for Milwaukee Ballet's 'The Nutcracker'

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- There's a positive update to a story CBS 58 shared with viewers last week about the Milwaukee Ballet's production of "The Nutcracker."
Local musicians were upset because the ballet company was going to use recorded music for the performances because of financial considerations.
On Monday, July 14, the Milwaukee Ballet announced that thanks to a contribution from a "first-time anonymous donor," a live orchestra has been funded for every public performance of the show.
In a statement, Milwaukee Musicians Association, AFM Local 8 said:
“This is a good day for the audiences who love the wonderful live music that brings The Nutcracker to life, but let's be clear: it should never have come to this point. Live music is the heart and soul of these performances, and the announcement that the Milwaukee Ballet was moving away from live music simply should have never happened. We are so happy to preserve the artistic integrity of this piece, and we are grateful to the anonymous donor who stepped up to ensure live music for this season, but now it is up to the Milwaukee Ballet to work with the musicians at AFM Local 8 and ensure that live music persists and that musicians are not left wondering about their livelihoods."
The production of "The Nutcracker" is scheduled for Dec. 6-26. Learn more here.
