Appleton Police Officer and Bystander Shot, Suspect Dead

APPLETON -  An Appleton Police Department officer is being treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound after an incident in Appleton early this morning.
The series of incidents began at approximately 10:37 P.M. yesterday night with a reported theft of merchandise from the Mobil Gas Station on E. Newberry Street.

The gas station employee provided a detailed suspect description and the suspect fled the store on foot. At approximately 12:04 this morning a similarly described suspect stole merchandise in the same manner from the MotoMart Gas Station on Kensington Drive and again fled on foot.

An Appleton Police Department officer spotted a man matching the suspect description at approximately shortly after on Kensington Drive near Kensington Court. The suspect resisted arrest and a physical struggle took place. During the struggle, the officer was shot. Two men in a passing car stopped at the scene and exited the car to help the officer. One of the bystanders was shot by the suspect.

The suspect, a 23-year old Appleton man, died of a gunshot wound at the scene. 

The Green Bay Police Department is investigating this incident at the request of the Appleton Police Department. More information is expected to be released later today.
