Arctic Fox exhibit unveiled at Racine Zoo
RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Racine Zoo has opened a new outdoor exhibit for its Arctic Fox residents, Echo and Luna.
The updated enclosure, located in the southeast corner of the zoo near the bear exhibit, provides the foxes with a heated shelter and additional space for activities like "caching," or hiding the food they do not eat immediately to search for later.
In a press release issued on Thursday, April 6, the Racine Zoo noted that the enclosure was designed to accommodate the needs of the foxes and to encourage natural behaviors, such as foraging for hidden food. Ross Cecil's support made the exhibit upgrade possible.
Echo, a six-year-old male and Luna, a six-year-old female were brought to Racine Zoo as kits from the Great Bend Zoo in Kansas in 2016.
The exhibit can be viewed from both ground level and the recently built “Bear Burrow” structure, giving the foxes a multi-tiered platform and a sheltered ledge to look out upon the zoo's Lake Michigan shoreline.
