Attorney says lawsuit 'a fair expectation' after video shows Milwaukee officer punching man
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Police Department is reviewing an arrest near Keefe and Palmer in the Harambee neighborhood after video of the arrest spread online. The arrest happened Thursday, Oct. 8.
Video recorded by a witness shows two officers trying to arrest a man who is on his stomach. A third officer then punches the man several times in the area of his head and shoulders.
Police say the incident began with a traffic stop for a license plate violation, and that the man, a passenger, was not cooperating and had a gun in the front of his hoodie.
Attorney B'Ivory Lamarr, who now represents the man's family, says nothing about that explains why the third officer used that amount of force. "I think the video speaks for itself," Lamarr said.
"I think that when you look at this video, it's disturbing. I think there's no explanation or justification law enforcement could provide to explain why you'd use the type of force that was used," Lamarr added.
In a statement, the department said, "MPD acknowledges the community's concern. This incident is currently under review."
Lamarr says he and the family will hold a press conference Wednesday, Oct. 14. Asked whether the family will file a lawsuit, he said, "I think that's a fair expectation."
