Authorities: Wisconsin gas station shooter killed himself
FRANKSVILLE, Wis. (CBS 58) - The Wisconsin Department of Justice released more details in Tuesday morning's gas station shootings in Racine County. On a GoFundMe page, family members of the victim, 22-year-old Anthony Griger, say it was "a shocking act of violence."
The Wisconsin DOJ says the shootings started at the Pilot Travel Center in Franksville around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 13. Anthony Griger was pumping gas at the time when 32-year-old John McCarthy shot and killed him.
Neighbors of the suspect say he kept a low profile.
"No, never met him, I've talked to a couple of the other neighbors and they've never met him or even seen him either," said Jamie Hansen, a neighbor of John McCarthy.
Officials say after McCarthy killed Anthony Griger he drove to a Mobil gas station two miles away. There, McCarthy tried to carjack an unmarked Racine County sheriff deputy's car and ended up exchanging gunfire with the deputy.
After exchanging gunfire, the Wisconsin DOJ says McCarthy shot himself in the head and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The deputy is expected to survive his injuries and is recovering at a hospital. Meanwhile, family members of 22-year-old Anthony Griger, who call him "Nino," say it was all too sudden. In a GoFundMe page they say:
"On July 13, 2021, our beloved Anthony (Nino) Griger was taken from us in a shocking act of violence at the very young age of 22. There are no words to express the anguish and shock that all of Nino's family and friends are experiencing right now. We pray that he is at peace and in the loving arms of those who have gone before him. This is all so sudden and in just trying to do something to help out, I'm asking for donations to help offset the costs of a funeral that should never have had to have been planned. I know his parents, my cousin Tony and his wife Nina, would be thankful for anything. If you feel like I do and just don't know what to do, but want to do something, please consider this option."
Community members say the shootings came as a shock to the area.
"You know Franksville is a nice little quiet town, nothing much ever happened," said Dale Erdmann, manager at Brossman's Bar in Franksville.
The recovering deputy is on medical leave -- for more information on the GoFundMe, click here.

CALEDONIA, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin Department of Justice says a man who killed a 22-year-old who was pumping gas later shot himself in the head after exchanging gunfire with an undercover sheriff's investigator.
The Justice Department said Thursday that 32-year-old John McCarthy killed himself after confronting the undercover sheriff's investigator at another gas station not far away in Caledonia on Tuesday morning.
The justice department says both McCarthy and the investigator were struck by gunfire before McCarthy fatally shot himself.
Authorities say the investigator, whose name hasn't been released, remained hospitalized Thursday for wounds that aren't considered life-threatening.
