RACINE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A bat found in Racine County has tested positive for rabies, according to the Racine County Public Health Division.

A resident captured the bat after being concerned about potential exposure to their pets. Health officials investigated, had the bat tested and worked with the resident to quarantine and vaccinate any animals that may have come into contact with it.

Rabies is rare in the U.S. but is still a concern because millions of Americans are bitten by animals each year, and the virus is commonly found in bats, raccoons, foxes, coyotes and skunks, according to the health division.

According to the RCPHD, the disease spreads through contact with saliva or nervous system tissue and is fatal if untreated, though preventable with proper care.

Anyone bitten or scratched should immediately wash the wound with soap and water and contact a physician or local health department.
