MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Fall is a common time for roof repairs in Wisconsin, with mild weather making it easier to fix leaks, flashing or missing shingles before winter snow and ice turn small problems into bigger ones.

Roofing contractors are consistently the most inquired-about type of business with the Better Business Bureau, according to Lisa Schiller, the organization's senior director of investigations and media relations, who joined us Monday, Oct. 5.

Schiller recommends getting referrals, verifying a contractor's licensing and insurance, and making sure the scope of the project, including cleanup and waste removal, is spelled out in writing. A detailed, itemized estimate is a good sign of a thorough contractor, she said.

Schiller also warned homeowners to be cautious of so-called "storm chasers," contractors who show up unprompted after a storm claiming to have spotted roof damage or extra materials from another job.
