'Black Nativity' returns to Milwaukee stage with new director and vision

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- "Black Nativity" by Langston Hughes returns to Milwaukee for its eighth season, featuring a new director and a fresh interpretation of the classic play. The production, presented by Black Arts MKE, will run from Thursday, Dec. 7, to Sunday, Dec. 10, at Wilson Theater at Vogel Hall, Marcus Center.

Artistic Director Wanyah Frazier and new Director Ashley Jordan noted in a Tuesday, Oct. 25 press release that they aim to offer an experience elevated by new artistic influences and extensive historical research.

Originally penned by Langston Hughes in 1961, "Black Nativity" retells the biblical birth of Christ from an African American perspective, merging traditional storytelling with elements of African diaspora poetry, music and dance.

"As we move into a period of ‘Renaissance’ in Milwaukee’s creative environment, we have the opportunity to create a rendition of 'Black Nativity' that provides an intergenerational, culturally expansive and professional arts experience," Frazier said in the release.

Performances are scheduled for Thursday and Friday at 7:30 p.m. with student matinees at 11 a.m., Saturday shows at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and a closing performance on Sunday at 2 p.m. An ASL interpreted performance will be held on Saturday, Dec. 9, at 2 p.m.
