Milwaukee Brewers open nominations for the 2023 'Nellie Global Award'

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Brewers have opened nominations for the annual "Nellie Global Award" in honor of former Brewers coach and broadcaster, Davey Nelson.

The award recognizes Wisconsin residents who have made significant and meaningful contributions to society on a global scale.

A highly regarded figure within the Brewers organization, Nelson held various roles, including that of a board member, supporter and contributor to Open Arms Home for Children in South Africa, a non-profit organization provides a nurturing environment and essential care for children orphaned due to the AIDS pandemic.

Brewers President of Business Operations Rick Schlesinger noted in a Tuesday, Feb. 28 press release that Nelson continues to be cherished by the Brewers family.

He added, “His optimism was infectious, and his commitment to positively impacting the lives of others and the bettering the global community was unquestioned. We are honored to present an award that keeps Davey’s mission alive.”

The Nellie Global Award is open for nominations to U.S. citizens aged 18 and above who can propose a Wisconsin resident, also 18 years old or older, for the recognition. Wisconsin residents are also allowed to self-nominate.

Nominations can be submitted through an online form found on brewers.com/NellieAward by Friday, June 9.

The Brewers will review all nominations before selecting the winner of the award. The recipient will be recognized prior to the team's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday, June 20, which is also Davey’s birthday.
