MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A caretaker has been charged with reckless neglect causing death after not calling 911 or seeking medical attention for a patient that was allegedly strangling himself. 

On August 11, 2025, officers arrived at to the Right Way Family Home, a group home on W. Casper Street in Milwaukee. They found the victim lying on his back, with blood clotting beneath his head and a bruise on his neck. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene. 

The complaint outlines that law personnel spoke to one of the caretakers at the group home. He said that when he arrived for his shift, he made contact with the caregiver from the night before, identified as Deshawn Wilson, and found the victim lying on the ground in the kitchen. 

According to the complaint, the other caregiver asked Wilson if he called 911 and Wilson said he did not. Wilson said to him that he didn't want the other caretaker to call the police. When the other caretaker did call 911, Wilson left the residence. 

The other caretaker said that Wilson told him that the victim strangled himself but would not give a straight answer as to how the victim ended up in the kitchen or what happened. 

Authorities say that when they spoke to Wilson, he said that the victim strangled himself with a belt and that Wilson woke up to sounds of someone struggling to breathe. 

According to the complaint, the victim crawled to the kitchen. 

Wilson didn't explain where the belt went or how it was removed from the victim's neck. Wilson stated that he never called 911 or sought medical attention because he panicked.  

In an examination of the body, the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office stated that the injuries on the victim were consistent to strangulation and significant force is required to cause them. The examiner did state that it is "feasible that [the victim] could have strangled himself and then died hours later from complications." 

Wilson has been charged with one count of reckless neglect causing death.
