Cedarburg police welcome new K-9 officer 'Nitro'

CEDARBURG, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Cedarburg Police Department has welcomed a new member to the force. 

K-9 Nitro is a blue Belgian Malinois born in Hungary in May of 2022. 

Paired with Cedarburg Police Officer Jon Schemenauer, K-9 Nitro is a blue Belgian Malinois born in Hungary in May of 2022. He is trained in explosives detection, patrol work, apprehension and tracking. Officer Schemenauer and Nitro have been training for the past six weeks at Shallow Creek Kennels - Premier Police Service Dogs.

The police department says, with events and festivals growing in the city, they believe an explosives detection canine would serve the community well and provide an extra layer of security and safety.
