Children injured in Kenosha County crash, driver arrested for OWI
KENOSHA COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- An investigation is underway following a crash that injured a woman and two children Wednesday, March 22.
First responders arrived at the scene near the 400 block of Sheridan Road in the Village of Somers just after 6 p.m.
Authorities say an initial investigation indicates a Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling southbound at a high rate of speed when it swerved to avoid striking a vehicle in front of it and traveled off the road, striking a tree.
The operator of the Jeep, identified as 27-year-old Erika McCoy from Kenosha, and her children, ages 2 and 7, were injured in the crash. Deputies say the children were not secured or wearing seatbelts.
The sheriff's office says all occupants of the vehicle were taken to an area hospital, and the 7-year-old was later transported to Children's Wisconsin with potentially life-threatening injuries.
Officials say McCoy showed signs of intoxication and was taken into custody for OWI with passengers under 16 causing injury, second-degree recklessly endangering safety and knowingly operating a motor vehicle while suspended, causing great bodily harm.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Kenosha County Sheriff's Department Detective Bureau at 262-605-5102.
