City of Milwaukee to upgrade thousands of street lights to LED by 2026

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee will be a lot brighter come 2026, because the Department of Public Works (DPW) says they will be upgrading all eligible street lights to LED.
According to a news release, nearly 54,000 of the city's 87,000 street and alley lights will be updated, making 60% of Milwaukee brighter at night and, and greatly reducing the number of street light outages.
DPW says street lighting circuits don't follow the grid pattern like the roads do.
There are two types of circuits in Milwaukee, series circuits and multiple circuits.
Series circuits
Series circuits date back to the early 1900s and send constant current to each street light at a high voltage. If one light goes out or if there is a failure in the circuit, all the street lights after the faulty pathway will not receive power and will be out (also they cannot support LED lights due to high voltage operation).
Multiple circuits
Multiple circuits are a lower voltage circuit connection with constant voltage for each street light. If one light goes out or there is a faulty circuit, the street lights will continue working and they can support LED lights.
If you'd like to find out what type of circuits are near you, DPW created a map to help.
If your street light is out you can let DPW know by reporting it online here or call 414-286-CITY.
If multiple blocks of street lights are out at one time, this is an emergency request. Please do not report online and instead call 414-286-CITY to report immediately.
