Close call at crosswalk outside of school in Delafield caught on camera
CBS 58 DELAFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) — A close call at a crosswalk outside of a school in Delafield is causing major concerns for residents.
"It’s time to do something seriously about this crosswalk before something bad happens," said Edward Kranick, chairman of the Delafield Town Board.
A parent waiting outside of North Shore Middle School took a video of the incident. It shows the crossing guard and another person walking across the street. Then, a driver speeds through the crosswalk.
"I just can’t believe how inattentive the driver was at the time, and it’s unfortunate," Kranick said. "Police have tried to track that individual down, and they told me no luck, so that individual got away with it that day and luckily didn’t kill anybody."
He says this is just the latest in years' worth of close calls at the crossing at North Shore Drive and Old School House Road.
He wants the road to be ruled hazardous, so it could trigger more safety measures.
"I would definitely like the speed limit reduced, like to see the crosswalk reconfigured. There’s a $300,000 plan to redo the highway, but somebody’s got to come up with the money to pay for it."
Kranick says to help with prevention, the school board funded putting up flashing lights and reduced the speed limit during pickup and drop-off hours, but it's not enough.
"I'd like them to offer busing back to the kids on this side of the road so they can get to school safely," Kranick said.
CBS 58 News reached out to the district and school board regarding safety and plans moving forward but hasn't heard back yet.
