Coggs Building to be redeveloped into affordable housing, commercial space
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Marcia P. Coggs Human Services Building in Milwaukee is set for redevelopment into 65 affordable housing units, commercial space and a small café.
Milwaukee County announced a partnership with Gorman & Company, a firm known for converting historic buildings into housing, to facilitate the project on Wednesday, June 19.
County Executive David Crowley’s office detailed the agreement, noting that Gorman & Company will purchase the property, located at 1220 W. Vliet Street, for $1 million. The redevelopment aims to create larger, family-serving affordable units while preserving the building's historic character.
Plans for the Coggs Building include 65 affordable apartments, with the first-floor housing Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Services and a café. Solar panels will be installed on the roof to reduce energy costs.
The redevelopment is expected to be completed in 2025, with the Milwaukee County Department of Health and Human Services moving out of the current building once the new Marcia P. Coggs Health & Human Services Building is constructed.
