‘Could be the future me’: Milwaukee girls hockey team with Olympic dreams
ANDY MANDEL MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) - As the USA Women’s Hockey Team continues its Olympic journey in Italy, hockey players in Milwaukee are not missing a second of the action.
“I know they’re all excited, they thought they were skipping school to watch it, and I said, 'no your parents are taping it, you guys can watch it tomorrow night',” SHAW 10U Girls Head Coach Andy Mandel said.
SHAW has several girls' hockey teams, with Mandel taking over the 10U team this season.
“It’s really the first team I’ve been a part of where they do everything together,” Mandel said.
Mandel says the USA team has been an inspiration for the girls, who have traveled the country this year for tournaments, winning one in Iowa.
“It’s been a lot easier to lean into that, it’s on TV, we can get them jerseys, we can do all this stuff so that hype has really helped me get them even more excited than they already were,” Mandel said.
Mattie Mandel is on the team and has been playing hockey almost her entire life.
“I liked the girls because they’re girls and a lot of girls back then didn’t get to play hockey,” Mandel said. “I like how that we can play hockey and we’re doing really good.”
The girls have done their best to keep up with the action, watching games while practicing and keeping a close eye on the scores.
“I love how intelligent they are and how hard they work,” 10U player Kai Culver said.
Mila Macdonald is on the 8U team and is already looking at the Olympics as a dream in her career.
“That could be the future me,” Macdonald said.
