Crews begin spring highway cleanup across Milwaukee County

Milwaukee County DOT

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee County Department of Transportation has launched its annual spring cleanup effort along local highways.

Crews began clearing litter near I-43/94 by Holt Avenue on Monday, March 31, and are expected to continue throughout the week. The aim is to cover all 1,800 highway lane miles maintained by the department.

According to county officials, more than one million pounds of litter were removed during last year’s cleanup. The department is again encouraging residents to dispose of waste properly and consider volunteering for local cleanup efforts or the state Department of Transportation’s Adopt-A-Highway Program.

County Executive David Crowley and Highway Director Eduardo Santiago both emphasized the role residents play in reducing roadway debris within a Tuesday, April 1 press release.

Crowley noted, "Ensuring litter is properly disposed in the first place is the best way keep Milwaukee County looking its best for families and visitors as the weather warms up." Santiago added, "Not only will this improve how our community looks, it means our crews can dedicate their time to important highway safety and maintenance activities instead of litter pickup."
