MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — Milwaukee police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 6-year-old child who was killed near the corner of 51st and Hope on Tuesday, April 1, around 9:30 p.m.

The child was found to have sustained gunshot wounds before being pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials.

Police said on Wednesday afternoon that a 40-year-old woman and a 26-year-old woman were arrested regarding the investigation. Police did not say what led up to the shooting.

CBS 58 talked with the boy's father, who shared a photo of himself with his son. He did not want to share his son's full name but says he's known as "King."

Neighbors confirmed the shooting happened in the home and described the large police response.

"The whole block was just covered in police cars, and all we see was yellow tape, so we knew it was somebody that got killed. That's just terrible, the way it is here in Milwaukee, that is just sad. How does a 6-year-old get shot and killed? I don't understand that," said Garfield, neighbor.

The shooting happened across the street from the Academy of Excellence, where staff told us "King" was not a student.

According to unconfirmed social media posts, his seventh birthday would have been Thursday, April 3.
