Video shows high-speed chase that ended when man fleeing police drove into Lake Como
TOWN OF GENEVA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Newly released dashcam and body camera video from the Lake Geneva Police Department shows a high-speed chase in the Town of Geneva that ended when a man fleeing police drove into Lake Como last month.
Lake Geneva police say they attempted to stop 18-year-old Cash Rauscher, of Delavan, near Broad Street back on Aug. 7 after seeing a passenger hanging out of the vehicle he was driving.
Police say Rauscher refused to stop, drove the wrong way on a one-way road, and picked up speed.
The chase ended when the car went into Lake Como from a boat launch on Schofield Drive, traveling about 100 feet into the lake.
The police department says all four people inside the car were able to get out of the vehicle and swim to a nearby pier, where officers helped them out of the water. Two of the people were taken to a hospital for treatment.
In newly released body camera video, one person told officers they had been trying to get Rauscher to stop.
“I don’t know where the driver went, but we told him to stop,” the person said.
Officers eventually took Rauscher into custody.
In another portion of the body camera video, Rauscher reflected on what had happened.
“I wasn’t thinking. Now I’m thinking I could have injured people, injured other people. Made my life worse,” Rauscher said.
Video also shows crews later pulling the car from Lake Como.
Rauscher is facing four felony charges, along with multiple traffic citations, including:

- Operating Without Insurance
- Failure to Obey Traffic Officer
- Fleeing/Eluding a Traffic Officer
- Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign
- Unreasonable and Imprudent Speed
- Reckless Driving – Endangering Safety
- Violation of Absolute Sobriety
- 2nd Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety
Records show his next court date is scheduled for Sept. 28.
