MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — While the Brewers players make the magic happen on the field, it’s the grounds crew that keeps the field in good shape and keeps the team afloat.

On Friday night, Brewers groundskeepers from different decades reunited at Kelly’s Bleachers to catch up and celebrate the recent World Series championship.

“I tell everybody when I walk by them to pay attention to the grounds crew, pay attention to the grounds crew. They make it happen,” former groundskeeper Rob Romero said.

Groundskeepers dating back to the 1970s were in attendance.

“The grounds crew were the first guys that ran the sausage races, just on Sundays, and then it became so popular, it was on Opening Day, promotional days, and then it became every day,” former groundskeeper Rob Erdmann said.

The grounds crew mainly focuses on the field, but the job goes way beyond that.

“All the different jobs we used to do, from chasing people that ran onto the field to cleaning up puke in the bleachers on Opening Day,” Erdmann said.

No matter when the guys were on the field, the recent championship means everything to them.

“I’m retired, I’m home now, and I got to see them win the pennant. I'm glad I got to see them win the World Series. It was the greatest day in my life,” Romero said. “I was just so proud to work with these guys. They’re all great guys. Every year we had great guys.”
