MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Democrats will control the Wisconsin Legislature for the first time in 16 years after the Tuesday Nov. 3 general election, which also decided races for state treasurer and secretary of state.

Democrats needed to flip two seats to win the state Senate and gained three, turning an 18-15 Republican majority into an 18-15 Democratic one.

In the 5th Senate District, which covers Wauwatosa, West Allis, Brookfield and Pewaukee, Democrat Robyn Vining defeated Republican Mike Roberts. In the 21st District, Democrat Trevor Jung defeated Republican Jim Croft for the seat long held by Republican Van Wanggaard.

In the Assembly, Democrats needed to flip five seats and did. They may have won as many as eight, which would give them a 53-46 majority starting next year. In the 61st District, which covers Greenfield, Greendale, Hales Corners and the southwest side of Milwaukee, Army veteran Democratic Ben Brist defeated Republican Bob Donovan with 55% of the vote.

Republican John Leiber was defending his seat as state treasurer against Democrat Yee Leng Xiong, who is projected to win. For secretary of state, Milwaukee Alder Jocasta Zamarripa, a Democrat, defeated businessman Jay Schroeder.
