Denis Sullivan leaves Milwaukee, departs for new home in Boston

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Maritime Staple on the Milwaukee lakefront is now headed for its new home.

The 137-foot Denis Sullivan — the world's only replica of a 19th-century three-mastered Great Lakes schooner -- left Milwaukee harbor on Oct. 8.

It was recently sold to "World Ocean School", a nonprofit based in Boston that will operate the ship year-round.

Volunteers say while it's sad to see the ship leave, they are grateful others will get to use and enjoy it.

"On the one hand, it's heartbreaking to see the boat leaving," said volunteer Rick Fitzgerald. "On the other hand, she's going to World Ocean School, which is a great organization.

Fitzgerald said it's likely that the Denis Sullivan will occasionally return to Milwaukee for events.
