CBS 58 Hometowns: History of Wauwatosa

WAUWATOSA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- To learn more about the rich history of Wauwatosa, our Amanda Porterfield paid a visit to the Wauwatosa Historical Society for this week's CBS 58 Hometowns to speak with the folks working to preserve the unique stories.

Their efforts to preserve local heritage comes through tours, events and archival work based at the Kneeland-Walker House. The WHS, which purchased the property in 1987, operates from the 1890 Victorian home once owned by Norman Kneeland and later by the Walker family.

Wauwatosa’s history dates back to 1835, with major milestones including the first train arriving from Milwaukee in 1850 and a large commercial fire in 1895 that spurred city reorganization, according to the society.

Visitors can tour the property, attend lectures and view artifacts including over 2,000 scanned glass plate negatives from the early 1900s. The organization accepts donations and relies on volunteers to continue its operations.
