DPW tips for the first winter storm of the season

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- With the first winter storm blowing through southeast Wisconsin, the Department of Public Works has tips on how to deal with the current snow. 

Crews are currently on the streets working to keep them clear. 

Garbage and recycling may be delayed during the snowstorm. 

During long-term storms plows are focused on the keeping the main streets open.

Driving tips: 

  • If you can, stay home. 
  • Plan your route and stay on main streets as much as possible. 
  • Slow down and provide space while driving. 
  • Stay back from trucks salting or brining streets. 

Resident responsibilities: 

  • Follow parking Snow Emergency parking rules.
  • Keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice within 24 hours after snow has stopped falling. 
  • Assist neighbors in clearing their snow, especially the elderly and disabled. 
  • Clear hydrant of snow and ice. 
  • Clear garbage and recycling carts.
