Driver charged, accused of fleeing scene of Muskego crash that killed mother
Waukesha County Sheriff\'s Department MUSKEGO, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Wauwatosa man is facing criminal charges after allegedly running from the scene of a crash that killed his mother.
Records show 47-year-old Casey Yiannackopoulos is charged with first degree reckless homicide, obstructing an officer, resisting an officer, and hit-and-run resulting in death.
Police responded to the scene near Hillendale Drive and Maple Court in Muskego on Nov. 2.
Officers located a vehicle resting on its passenger side in a ditch with significant damage, according to a criminal complaint. First responders took the front-seat passenger- identified by Muskego police as a 77-year-old woman - to Froedtert Hospital, where she died of her injuries.
Court documents say a witness told police he saw the vehicle pull out of a nearby driveway, stop briefly in the road and then accelerate rapidly. Seconds later, he heard a "loud bang" and saw lights in the ditch. The witness was one of several, according to the complaint, who reported seeing the driver run from the scene, appearing to be intoxicated.
Another witness reported hearing the driver say, "It's my mom in there -- get her out," before fleeing.
The car involved was registered to Yiannackopoulos, according to prosecutors, who was eventually found in the home he'd left just prior to the crash, hiding underneath blankets and a plastic bin cover in a crawl space above the garage.
The complaint says Yiannackopoulos refused officers' orders until both a taser and police K-9 were utilized, ultimately leading to his arrest.
Yiannackopoulos reportedly told officers, "It was an accident" and said that if he'd been told his mother was deceased, he would have been "way more cooperative."
Court records show cash bond has been set at $750,000.
Yiannackopoulos is due in court for a hearing on Nov. 6.
