Duplex fire displaces family, cat does not survive

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee fire received a call around 8:40 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3, about a fire on the 2nd floor of a two and a half story duplex near 16th and Ring.

Fire officials say there was a report of someone on the 2nd floor but found later that was not the case.

Two cats were rescued from the dwelling, however, one of those cats subsequently died of smoke inhalation. Another cat escaped the burning building on its own.

Authorities say a family was displaced and that the Red Cross was called.

There is no report of injuries to the occupants or firefighters.

The fire was contained largely to the 2nd floor and attic. No other nearby homes were burned.

The fire is under investigation.
