ELKHORN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Elkhorn Police Department is asking the public for help in locating a sexual assault suspect.

According to police, the suspect is wanted for sexually assaulting and seriously injuring a woman who was leaving her place of employment near E. Geneva Street and S. Lincoln Street.

The assault happened near the Walworth County Fair, just a day before the fair started. Officers located a female victim parked in the S. Lincoln Street public parking lot suffering from serious injuries around 10:15 p.m. on August 28.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the woman left her place of employment shortly after 9 p.m. and did not immediately return home.

Relatives then began to look for the victim. When they discovered her car in the parking lot, they saw an unknown man flee on foot from the vehicle. He then entered the backyard of a home on S. Jackson Street.

"It's scary. I have a daughter that plays on these streets and that's my main concern -- is my child, my neighbor's kids," said Kimberly Ratz. Ratz lives on the street the possible suspect ran towards.

Relatives found the victim in the vehicle in her car and called 911. She was unable to communicate with officers but police believe she was the victim of sexual assault.

The woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries she suffered during the attack.

"I hope the suspect gets caught, and I hope the woman's okay, safe, and not too traumatized because it's got me..." said Ratz.

The Elkhorn Police Department is attempting to locate a maroon conversion van with plastic covering the rear window on the passenger side. This van was seen at the business prior to the attack.

The picture of the van being shared by police is not the actual van used but similar in appearance to the one being searched for.

Anyone with information regarding a van matching the description or with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Elkhorn Police Department at 262-723-2210.

The investigation remains ongoing.
