Federal judge dismisses lawsuit filed by Trump admin for Wisconsin voter list

CBS 58

WISCONSIN (CBS 58) -- Wisconsin voters' information will remain private. A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit Thursday filed by the Trump administration, designed to force Wisconsin to hand over complete and unedited registration information for every voter in the state.

The judge said voter records are not documents that must be produced under the civil rights act.

Forward Latino's National President Darryl Morin released the following statement regarding Thursday's decision:

“This ruling represents an important victory for every American who believes in fair, transparent, and lawful elections, and in the fundamental principle that every eligible citizen’s vote deserves to be counted and protected.
For years, our nation has witnessed a steady stream of false claims and conspiracy theories designed to undermine public confidence in our elections and cast doubt on the legitimacy of lawful outcomes. These attacks have not only weakened trust in our democratic institutions, but in some cases have fueled dangerous efforts to overturn the will of the people through schemes involving fake electors and even violence against our nation’s Capitol on January 6th.
In America, honest debate is healthy. Disagreement is part of democracy. Elections themselves are the mechanism through which the people peacefully decide the future of our nation. But when misinformation and political extremism threaten the constitutional principles of equality, representation, and the rule of law, we all have a responsibility to stand up and defend them through lawful and peaceful means. That is why Forward Latino proudly stood alongside the Wisconsin Elections Commission, Common Cause, the Wisconsin Alliance for Retired Americans, and our fellow partners in defense of not only the lawful right to vote, but the integrity of our democratic system itself.
Today’s ruling reaffirms that the Constitution, the rule of law, and the voices of lawful voters remain stronger than fear, disinformation, and political intimidation.
Forward Latino wishes to acknowledge the outstanding work of counsel at Elias Law Group LLP and Pines Bach LLP.
God bless the great State of Wisconsin, and God bless the United States of America.”

This is the eighth time the administration's efforts to get voter information have been thrown out in courts around the country.
