Federal Transit Administration calls on MCTS to address fare evasion
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is calling on the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) to address fare evasion, calling it a public safety issue.
In a statement, the FTA said, "each time a rider steps onto a bus without paying, it erodes the public's trust in the system, discourages responsible riders and normalizes disorder."
They're demanding MCTS provide information on how they plan to address fare evasion, as well as certain financial information. Giving them until Dec. 22 to provide the data.
MCTS responded to the FTA saying, in part, their 2026 budget "dedicates new resources to both enhance safety and target fare evasion on MCTS buses."
They added that they're planning to get the FTA that data by the requested time.
