MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- For 31 years, the Milwaukee Fire Dept. has been using the Survive Alive House to teach kids about the importance of fire safety.

During National Fire Prevention Week, all students second through fifth grade at Milwaukee Public Schools will go through the Survive Alive House.

While the flames and smoke are fake, the sound of alarms and the heated doors mimic what to expect if you ever find yourself in a real fire.

The Milwaukee Fire Dept. teaches kids tips for staying safe in these situations and way to prevent fires in the kitchen.

Lt. Velazquez-Sanchez with MFD says the information is more likely to stick with kids when acting out these real-life scenarios.

Members of the Milwaukee Fire Dept. will be out in the community all week making sure houses have working smoke detectors, as well. You can always get a free smoke detector by calling (414) 286-8980 and leaving a message.
