MILWAUKEE COUNTY (CBS 58) -- A student from Franklin High School was honored Tuesdays with this year's Vel R. Phillips Award.
Bria Smith is taking a stand against gun violence in the wake of the Parkland School shootings.
As the President of the Milwaukee Youth Council, she's working to create change.
"Holding this plaque and standing in front of my parents just reminds me that we're in a generation of revolutionary people who are making revolutionary change," said Bria Smith.
Smith says she's inspired by the honor she was given.
She's vowed to continue her work to combat gun violence.
