GOP to hold first presidential primary debate in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The GOP will hold their first presidential primary debate in Milwaukee, according to the Republican National Committee.

In a memo obtained by CBS 58 Thursday, GOP Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said the Standing Committee on Presidential Debates voted to hold the first primary debate in August, coinciding with the RNC Summer Meeting.

It says the final criteria for the debate has not yet been decided.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson tweeted about the news Thursday afternoon, saying:

"Today’s announcement is an affirmation Milwaukee is an ideal location to stage a major event. I want our hospitality industry to grow – and for hardworking Milwaukee residents to have even more employment opportunities."
