Gov. Evers visits Brookfield preschool, highlighting initiatives to lower cost of child care
BROOKFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Governor Evers swung through southeast Wisconsin Thursday, and the reason is child care.
Evers visited the All 'Bout Children Preschool in Brookfield. He's trying to build support for his proposed budget, which includes nearly $500 million to extend a pandemic-era program that provides direct funding to child care providers.
This comes amid the Trump administration announcing those sweeping cuts to pandemic-related programs at the Department of Health and Human Services.
We asked the governor what he knows about how those cuts will affect Wisconsin.
"Have you talked to DHS today, or last night, about what the impacts are gonna be in Wisconsin?" CBS 58's A.J. Bayatpour asked.
"I have not had a chance to do that, but I get a sense that it's gonna be some pretty significant amount of money, and making things- to think, somehow, they're gonna keep some programs with few people running it? It's just gonna be a mess," Gov. Evers said.
The governor's office announced Thursday it is launching a website aimed at recruiting federal workers who have been laid off.
He says it will try to connect those people with both public and private sector jobs available in Wisconsin.
