Gunhild Carling, Sweden's 'Queen of Swing,' to headline Milwaukee's Big Band Grandstand

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Gunhild Carling, renowned as Sweden's "Queen of Swing," is set to headline the ninth annual Big Band Grandstand at Turner Hall Ballroom. Taking place Sunday, Dec. 3 at 4 p.m., the event aims to take the audience back to the swing era of the 1930s and 1940s.

Carling's performance has been ranked in the top three by MusicTheory.com among the most famous trombone players, though her talents extend to playing the bagpipes, trumpet, recorder and various string instruments. Carling's multifaceted performances are not limited to her instrumental prowess; she also integrates tap dance and vocals.

The event, supported by WMSE 91.7 FM, begins with a special DJ set by Dewey Gill, the station's curator of jazz and big band music. Following this, Carling and her big band will take the stage.

In addition to the musical performances, the Big Band Grandstand features a silent auction. Items available for bidding include Green Bay Packers tickets, a Film Buff package from Milwaukee Film and a pasta-making class for six. The proceeds from the auction will benefit WMSE’s studio operations, the digitization of their jazz library and the support of their 24/7 Live Jazz stream.

The show is family-friendly, annually presented by Direct Supply President and CEO Bob Hillis and Jenny Hillis, in honor of Bob and Genie Friedman. More information, including access to tickets, can be found by clicking here.
