'He cares for us': New Milwaukee Buck Tyler Herro gives back at basketball camp
NEW BERLIN, Wis. (CBS 58) — Milwaukee Bucks guard Tyler Herro returned to his hometown Saturday to help the next generation of basketball players chase their dreams.
Herro hosted a basketball camp at OAW Indoor Sports Complex in New Berlin for boys and girls ages 11 to 14. Dozens of kids took part in drills and scrimmages and had the chance to take pictures with Herro.
For some campers, the day was a chance to learn from a player who reached the NBA.
"The NBA has always been my dream," camper Domonic Eubanks said.
"I love basketball. I'm trying to make it to the WNBA," camper Karlee Miller said.
Miller said working with Herro gave her a better understanding of what it takes to reach that level.
"It feels really good because they understand the struggles that people go through to make it to that level, and I feel that he really helped us," Miller said.
Eubanks said having Herro at the camp showed him that the Bucks guard cares about the young players in the community.
"It feels good, and it means a lot. It gives me an understanding that he cares for us," Eubanks said.
Herro said returning home gives the annual camp more meaning now.
"We do this camp every year, and it means a little bit more now that I'm back here playing for the Bucks," Herro said.
Herro said he wants to continue connecting with young people who grew up in the same community.
"You know, be in the community and touch as many people as I can and hopefully inspire a bunch of young kids that grew up just like me in this community," Herro said.
For Miller, she had one message for other girls pursuing basketball.
"Follow your dreams. Don't believe in your haters. Your haters will ultimately hate on you," Miller said.
